Biochemical and hematological study of goats envenomed with natural and 60Co-irradiated bothropic venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lucas de Oliveira,P. C.; Sakate,M.; Madruga,R. A.; Barbosa,N. P.U..
Venoms from snakes of the Bothrops genus are proteolytic, coagulant, hemorrhagic and nephrotoxic, causing edema, necrosis, hemorrhage and intense pain at the bite site, besides systemic alterations. Many adjuvants have been added to the venom used in the sensitization of antiserum-producer animals to increase antigenic induction and reduce the envenomation pathological effects. Gamma radiation from 60Co has been used as an attenuating agent of the venoms toxic properties. The main objective was to study, comparatively, clinical and laboratory aspects of goats inoculated with bothropic (Bothrops jararaca) venom, natural and irradiated from a 60Co source. Twelve goats were divided into two groups of six animals: GINV, inoculated with 0.5mg/kg of natural...

Cobalt and marine redox evolution ArchiMer
Swanner, Elizabeth D.; Planavsky, Noah J.; Lalonde, Stefan; Robbins, Leslie J.; Bekker, Andrey; Rouxel, Olivier; Saito, Mak A.; Kappler, Andreas; Mojzsis, Stephen J.; Konhauser, Kurt O..
Cobalt (Co) is a bio-essential trace element and limiting nutrient in some regions of the modern oceans. It has been proposed that Co was more abundant in poorly ventilated Precambrian oceans based on the greater utilization of Co by anaerobic microbes relative to plants and animals. However, there are few empirical or theoretical constraints on the history of seawater Co concentrations. Herein, we present a survey of authigenic Co in marine sediments (iron formations, authigenic pyrite and bulk euxinic shales) with the goal of tracking changes in the marine Co reservoir throughout Earthʼs history. We further provide an overview of the modern marine Co cycle, which we use as a platform to evaluate how changes in the redox state of Earthʼs surface were...

Cobalt and vitamin B12 in diets for commercial laying hens on the second cycle of production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Kato,RK; Bertechini,AG; Fassani,EJ; Santos,CD; Dionizio,MA; Fialho,ET.
The supplementation of cobalt and vitamin B12 in diets for commercial laying hens on the second production cycle was studied. Four hundred and eighty light commercial laying hens, Lohmann LSL, were used at initial phase of forced molting laying period. The trial was conducted in a randomized design. The plots were the treatments which were constituted by combination of five cobalt levels (0.00; 0.30; 0.60; 0.90 and 1.20ppm) and two vitamin B12 levels (without and with 10µ/kg), and the split-plots were four periods (21, 42, 63 and 84 days) during the second period of production, with 4 repetitions and 12 hens per experimental unit. Food and water were provided ad libitum and eggs were collected twice daily. Performance and egg quality parameters were...

Contrasting biogeochemical cycles of cobalt in the surface western Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Dulaquais, Gabriel; Boye, Marie; Middag, Rob; Owens, Stephanis; Puigcorbe, Viena; Buesseler, Ken; Masque, Pere; De Baar, Hein J. W.; Carton, Xavier.
Dissolved cobalt (DCo; <0.2 µm; 14 to 93 pM) and the apparent particulate cobalt (PCo; >0.2 µm; <1 to 15 pM) were determined in the upper water column (<1000 m) of the western Atlantic Ocean along the GEOTRACES-A02 section (64°N to 50°S). The lowest DCo concentrations, typical of a nutrient-type distribution were observed in surface waters of the subtropical domains. Strong linear relationships between DCo and phosphate (P) as well as meridional gradients of decreasing DCo from high latitudes were characterized and both linked to the Co biological requirement. External sources such as the Amazon and the atmospheric deposition were found to contribute significantly (>10%) to the DCo stock of the mixed layer in the equatorial and north...

Das Sächsische Blaufarbenwesen und der Handel mit Kobaltfarben – nach Unterlagen der Bücherei der Bergakademie Freiberg Naturalis
Hammer, P..
The German word ‘Kobold’ is the term for gnomes and goblins. It appeared for the first time in connection with minerals in Agricola’s Bermannus (1530). The first practical use was in the form of zaffer or cobalt-blue. Zaffer will not melt alone, but accompanied by vitreous substances it melts into an azure colour and so used as ‘Smalte’ for glazed earthenware, for glass and china. Since 1470 the Saxony ore mountains, especially the Schneeberg district, was the most important supplier of cobalt ores. Main products of the ‘Blaufarbenwerke’ were zaffers (Safflor) cobaltoxides of different colours and smalte (Smalte) a mixture of cobaltoxides with quartz. The Electoral-Saxon blue colour was greatly appreciated. The Dutch managed in their country eight...

Effect of cobalt on growth, pigments and the photosynthetic electron transport in Monoraphidium minutum and Nitzchia perminuta Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sheekh,M.M.; El-Naggar,A.H.; Osman,M.E.H.; El-Mazaly,E..
The unicellular green alga Monoraphidium minutum and the diatom Nitzschia perminuta were cultured under different concentrations of Co2+. Growth and pigment content were slightly increased at low concentrations and inhibited by high Co2+ concentrations. The results concerning the effect of different concentrations of Co2+ on photosynthetic O2 evolution showed a reduction in the amount of O2 evolved by each alga in response to increasing Co2+ concentrations. However, an increase in O2 evolution for both M. minutum and N. perminuta was observed at relatively low Co2+ concentrations. Photosynthetic electron transport in M. minutum was more sensitive to Co2+ toxicity than in N. perminuta. On the other hand, the effect of the heavy metal on respiration showed...

Establishment of sensitive and resistant variety of tomato on the basis of photosynthesis and antioxidative enzymes in the presence of cobalt applied as shotgun approach Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Hasan,Syed Aiman; Hayat,Shamsul; Wani,Arif Shafi; Ahmad,Aqil.
Cobalt (Co) affords both beneficial as well as toxic effects to plants. The present study was performed with an aim to find out the varietal differences among five tomato cultivars against the Co induced changes in growth, photosynthesis, nitrate reductase (E.C.1.6.6.1), carbonic anhydrase (E.C.4.2.1.1), antioxidative enzymes i.e. peroxidase (E.C.1.11.1.7), catalase (E.C.1.11.1.6), superoxide dismutase (E.C.1.15.1.1) and that of proline content. Seeds of tomato (varieties, K-25, NTS-9, NBR-Uday, Sarvodya, and Malti) were soaked in 0, 100, 200 or 300 µM CoCl2 for 0, 4, 8, 12 h (shotgun approach) and sampled at 30 days after sowing. All the varieties showed significantly different response to different treatment combinations. Despite substantial varietal...

Etude du comportement des éléments traces en milieu estuarien : approche expérimentale et modélisation : Application à l'étude de la spéciation de Cd, Co et Cs dans les estuaires majeurs français (Seine, Loire, Gironde, Rhône) ArchiMer
Dange, Catherine.
Most of trace elements have a non conservative behavior in estuarine environments. It is the case of cadmium, cobalt and caesium for which the fate in estuarine and coastal zones is largely controlled by their distribution between water and suspended particles, which generally have high residence times or can be definitely deposited in these areas. Metallic contaminants and radionuclides can be present under various species : dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated) or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. Such distributions are the result of processes (physical, chemical, biological) which are controlled by many factors (ionic strengh, pH, Eh, major cations concentration, nature and...

Principais deficiências minerais em bovinos de corte. Infoteca-e

Towards an atomic level understanding of niobia based catalysts and catalysis by combining the science of catalysis with surface science Anais da ABC (AABC)
Schmal,Martin; Freund,Hans-Joachim.
The science of catalysis and surface science have developed, independently, key information for understanding catalytic processes. One might argue: is there anything fundamental to be discovered through the interplay between catalysis and surface science? Real catalysts of monometallic and bimetallic Co/Nb2O5 and Pd-Co/Nb2O5 catalysts showed interesting selectivity results on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (Noronha et al. 1996, Rosenir et al. 1993). The presence of a noble metal increased the C+5 selectivity and decreased the methane formation depending of the reduction temperature. Model catalyst of Co-Pd supported on niobia and alumina were prepared and characterized at the atomic level, thus forming the basis for a comparison with "real" support...

Trace element systematics in cold seep carbonates and associated lipid compounds ArchiMer
Wang, Xudong; Bayon, Germain; Kim, Jung-hyun; Lee, Dong-hun; Kim, Dahae; Guéguen, Bleuenn; Rouget, Marie-laure; Barrat, Jean-alix; Toffin, Laurent; Feng, Dong.
Seeping of methane-rich fluids at submarine cold seeps drives intense microbial activity and precipitation of authigenic carbonates. Some trace elements play an important role in the biogeochemical processes operating at cold seeps, especially as specific enzymatic co-factors related to methanogenesis and the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). However, it is unclear whether microbial trace metal utilization can be traced by the geochemical composition of seep carbonates. In this study, we analyzed a series of authigenic carbonate samples recovered from various seep settings worldwide and report for the first time trace element concentrations for total lipid fractions, combined with biomarker analyses and determination of elemental abundances in...
